A long overdue vacation and my camera got its first real workout of 2012. Yes, I slacked throughout the winter, but finally got a chance to bust out my camera on this trip. While we spent time in Monterey and wine country, I will start my post at the end….in San Francisco. Lots to see and obviously lots to shoot. Here are my favorites.
The golden hours remain the best time to shoot and so I headed to the north vista point of the Golden Gate Bridge at sunrise. The view of the bridge, however, is not ideal from this location, so instead I landed up capturing shots of the rising sun illuminating the city. I only had a five minute window before the sun disappeared into a solid ceiling of gray clouds.
There are numerous locations from where you can shoot the Golden Gate Bridge, most of them described in this really helpful post by Andy Frazer.
On a clear evening we drove up to Torpedo Wharf, on the San Francisco side of the Golden Gate Bridge, to get some shots and I captured the image below.
The Twin Peaks provide an awesome vista of the San Francisco cityscape, both by day and night. We first drove up there on a gorgeous Wednesday afternoon, on our way back from Sonoma. The conditions were clear, the notorious fog that blankets the city had rolled off and we had an unobstructed view of the cityscape and the bay, with a few hovering clouds.
Back again on a clear night. Overhanging clouds added to the drama of the scene. The cityscape was so vivid, however, that I only needed a few minutes to capture the shots I needed. Zoomed out for the second shot to incorporate the traffic trails.
There is a lot more to come. Watch this space for when I take to the streets of San Francisco and our excursion to wine country and Monterey.
